Between leaving the hospital and living independently, there is a vital gap that too many men who experience complex mental health challenges, learning disabilities, or substance use fall through. For men in this position, this gap often results in a harmful cycle of crisis, homelessness, and readmission. Traditional hostels provide basic accommodation but lack support for developing life skills. Independent housing assumes individuals can manage on their own. Neither option provides the necessary support for men experiencing additional challenges.
SIG Penrose Biscot House is our nine-bedroom supported accommodation service. It offers single men aged 18+ a stable base to build their confidence and practical skills for independent living. We work with men who have experienced homelessness, mental health crises, or other life challenges, providing intensive support in a community environment that feels like home.
Our approach recognises that successful independent living involves more than just providing accommodation — it requires confidence, practical skills, and ongoing support networks. We give men the time and space to recover, learn, and plan their next steps, whether moving into independent housing or accessing longer-term supported accommodation.
Your support helps us bridge the gap between crisis and independence, preventing costly readmissions and homelessness, while assisting men in rebuilding their lives with dignity.
Our experienced team provides person-centred support that meets each resident where they are in their recovery journey, building skills and confidence at their own pace.
From cooking and budgeting to medication management and tenancy skills, we help men develop the essential abilities to live independently and safely in the community.
We work closely with care coordinators and mental health teams to ensure residents maintain their medication and support plans while building resilience for independent living.
Through volunteering opportunities, group activities, and community connections, we help men build social networks and find purpose beyond their accommodation.
Rather than rushed moves, we work with each resident to carefully plan their next steps, whether independent living, long-term supported accommodation, or specialist services.
We foster a supportive community at Biscot House where residents learn from each other's experiences, share challenges, and celebrate successes in a non-judgmental environment.
We collaborate with residents to identify and tackle the root causes of their homelessness, whether it be substance use, trauma, or involvement with the criminal justice system.
Biscot House delivers significant value for Luton’s mental health and housing systems, preventing costly crises while supporting men in becoming active community members.
Every man we support represents potential savings of thousands of pounds in emergency services, hospital readmissions, and crisis accommodation. Mental health bed costs exceed £400 per night, while our preventative approach helps men maintain stability in the community at a fraction of this cost.
We reduce pressure on overstretched mental health services by providing a stepping stone between hospital and independent living. Our close work with care coordinators and mental health teams ensures continuity of care while reducing the risk of crisis readmissions.
Our residents often go on to volunteer with local project, contributing positively to the community rather than remaining dependent on services. This creates a positive cycle where men who have received support become assets to their neighbourhoods.
By addressing the complex challenges faced by the men who might otherwise cycle through hostels, hospitals, and the streets, we help create a more stable, safer community for everyone in Luton.
Our nine-bed service provides intensive support to single men aged 18+, helping them develop practical life skills and emotional resilience through weekly keywork sessions and community-based activities.
We work with men who have experienced mental health challenges, substance use, or involvement with the criminal justice system, providing the structured support they need to move successfully into independent living.
With demand growing for step-down accommodation that prevents costly readmissions, we need additional funding to enhance our community spaces and activities, which are crucial for residents' mental health and community integration.
“I am really happy at Biscot House, the staff are nice and friendly and help me when needed. I feel safe and secure and able to sleep at night. I have loved staying here.”
