Building Confidence and Creativity at SIG Penrose Drive: Meet Sam

Independent Approved Premises, such as SIG Penrose Drive, provide a safe, structured  environment for men transitioning back into the community, offering support and purposeful activities to help them build confidence and stability. Sam joined Penrose Drive just over a month ago and will soon be moving on, but his time here has been transformative. Initially apprehensive, he quickly embraced the opportunities available, attending every event, from football tournaments to arts and crafts sessions. A talented artist with aspirations of becoming a tattooist, Sam’s creativity and positivity shone through. His journey reflects resilience, growth, and a hopeful outlook for the future.

How did you feel when you first arrived here, and how has that changed over time?

When I first arrived, I was scared as I had never been in an AP. I was very apprehensive and did not know what to expect. I feel so welcome, and the staff have made me feel supported throughout my stay.

What has your experience been like living at Penrose Drive?

My experience has been great; the staff have been welcoming, although at times, it can be challenging due to the hygiene levels of other residents!

You’ve been very involved in resident activities. What’s been your favourite event so far and why?

My favourite event has been doing arts and crafts with Claudia; I love art and creative work!

How do you think these activities have helped you during your time here?

The six hours of purposeful activities have helped me not to hibernate, and I feel it is useful and has helped bring me out of my shell and engage with staff and residents.

We heard you’re a talented artist! Can you share what drawing means to you and how it helps you?

Drawing for me is a purpose and a job, creating stuff freehand. I enjoy being able to replicate other people’s work and games. I am working towards becoming a tattoo artist.

Do you have a favourite piece you’ve created while here?

My favourite piece I created while here was a drawing of the Dunns River Falls, a river in Jamaica.

What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself during your stay?

I have learned enough, though I have had a bad time with everything I have been through, I still have a purpose. I am looking towards the future, and I am still willing to be kind and support people and remain positive.

How have the staff and other residents supported you in your journey?

Staff have been supportive of my plans to become a tattoo artist. Staff have enabled me to have a space where I can be creative.

You’ll be moving on soon, what are your hopes and plans for the future?

I would like to become a qualified Tattoo artist, good enough to open my own shop,  and eventually buy a house.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just arriving at Penrose Drive, what would it be?

Trust the staff; they are here to help you; they are not the reason you are here. If you need anything, just speak to them.
