SIG Celebrates 10 Years
A Decade of Impact and Growth at Social Interest Group
Read moreAt Aspinden Care Home, we are privileged to support incredible individuals on their journeys, and few residents embody the spirit of our community quite like Sonia. Having lived at Aspinden for 17 years, Sonia has become a beloved member of our care home, bringing warmth, resilience, and joy to all who know her.
Now at the age of 96, Sonia continues to inspire both staff and fellow residents. Her presence is unmistakable—whether through her infectious smile or her beautifully personalised bedroom, painted a soothing sky blue and filled with treasured photos, teddy bears, and keepsakes from throughout her life.
Aspinden is more than just a place to live—it’s a home where residents are supported to maintain their independence and dignity while receiving the care they need. Sonia’s journey is a testament to this.
When she first arrived, Sonia was drinking whiskey and beer regularly. Over time, through harm reduction strategies, staff worked with her to gradually and safely reduce her alcohol intake. Today, she chooses whether she wants one or two cans of cider—or none at all—on any given day. This resident-led approach ensures that her choices and preferences are always respected.
Sonia is a true music lover, and nothing brings her more joy than listening to Frank Sinatra. Knowing this, our team gifted her a signed photo of Sinatra and regularly plays her favourite songs. She also benefits from things like, including massages, make-up and hairstyling—a reminder that self-care and small things are just as important as medical support.
Recognising the importance of her Finnish heritage, we invite the Finnish Church to visit regularly, with their band performing once a month to lift her spirits.
Sonia’s journey is a shining example of how harm reduction works. Instead of enforcing strict abstinence, we focus on stability, choice, and well-being. With a dedicated team of nurses, social workers, and GPs, we ensure Sonia has a care plan that evolves with her needs—from meals and activities to medication and emotional well-being.
At Aspinden, we believe that everyone deserves a life filled with dignity, joy, and personalised care. Sonia’s story is just one of many that highlight the incredible impact of our harm reduction approach and the strong sense of community we foster every day.
