Harvest Festival at Roots 2 Success

More than 100 people came together at the Roots 2 Success Garden on Tuesday, 15th September, for a vibrant Harvest Festival celebrating community, creativity and the achievements of project members.

Guests included the Mayor of Luton, Javad Hussain, Brenda Parkinson Roberts, Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, and local councillor Rob Roche. They joined members, colleagues, volunteers and community partners to recognise the time, care and teamwork that go into turning seeds and ideas into something valuable that has helped the project flourish.

Despite a challenging growing season, the garden was filled with colourful member-grown produce, handmade crafts and creative displays. The festival also provided an opportunity to celebrate members’ personal journeys and the connections they have developed, learning together and caring for a shared environment. Roots 2 Success supports people in improving their wellbeing, learning new skills, and experiencing the benefits of working outdoors as part of a welcoming community.

Roots to Fibre Showcase

A highlight of the festival was the Roots to Fibre showcase. The project explores how natural and sustainably sourced materials can be transformed through practical and creative skills. The showcase took visitors on a journey from the roots of an idea to the creation of finished pieces, bringing together gardening, sustainability, crafting and imagination.

It also encouraged conversations about where materials come from, about natural resources and the value of learning through practical experience.

A Welcoming and Joyful Celebration

Guests praised the warmth of the event, the achievements of members and the dedication of the Roots 2 Success team.

Susan Lousada, Deputy to the Lord Lieutenant, described the festival as a “wonderful, friendly and joyful day“.

Brenda Parkinson Roberts, Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, praised the colourful vegetables, handmade crafts and skills on display, adding:
“It was a real credit to you and all at Penrose Roots. You created a very welcoming and special day for everyone, especially your members. You are making such a difference.”

Mayor of Luton Javed Hussain highlighted the project’s contribution to community wellbeing and inclusion:
“Roots does valuable work in the community, promoting inclusion, creativity and a stronger sense of belonging. Their work is a great example of the positive contribution that our voluntary and community sector makes across Luton.”

Maureen, Deputy Manager, was particularly impressed by the team’s pride in the project:
“Their enthusiasm and sense of ownership were wonderful to see. Well done to you and your marvellous team. You should all be immensely proud of what you have accomplished.”

The Harvest Festival was a wonderful celebration of everything that makes Roots 2 Success special.
