Getting to Know Rebecca Escott-New, Trustee at SIG

As part of our Trustee Spotlight series, we’re getting to know the people who help guide and support SIG’s mission.

We recently caught up with Rebecca Escott-New, one of our newest Trustees, to learn more about what inspired her to join the Board, what has stood out most about SIG so far, and the leadership lessons she has picked up along the way.

What attracted you to becoming a Trustee at SIG?

I became a Trustee for SIG because its values reflect my own belief that people need more than just a roof over their heads to thrive. I’m passionate about creating positive social impact and supporting people facing complex challenges, and SIG’s holistic, person-centred approach was something I immediately connected with. It’s an organisation whose mission I genuinely believe in and feel privileged to support.

Having joined the Board recently, what has stood out to you most about SIG so far?

I have been struck by the breadth of support that SIG provides and the genuine commitment of its colleagues. Visiting some of the services in RBKC gave me a real insight into the difference that SIG makes. I was blown away not only by the level of support being offered, but also by the passion, dedication and care shown by staff. It was incredibly inspiring to see this first-hand.

What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?

You can’t solve the world’s problems in a day. Pick something to solve and go from there.

What has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned as a leader?

One of the most important things I’ve learned as a leader is that I don’t need to have all the answers. Earlier in my career I sometimes felt pressure to be the expert in the room. Over time, I’ve realised that leadership is more about listening, asking good questions and bringing together the right people than having every solution yourself. Some of the best decisions I’ve been involved in have come from creating space for others to contribute and challenge my thinking.

What are you most looking forward to contributing during your time on the Board?

What I am most looking forward to is helping SIG continue to maximise its impact for the people it supports. I hope to bring my experience of housing, transformation and governance to Board discussions, while also continuing to learn from colleagues and fellow Trustees. Having seen first-hand the incredible commitment of staff and the support provided through SIG’s services, I am excited to play a part in helping the organisation reach people who need our support.

If colleagues met you outside of work, what side of you would they be most surprised by?

How spectacularly untidy and disorganised I am. My approach to organisation is essentially “put it somewhere safe” and then immediately forget where that safe place is. Drawers and cupboards are full of things I’ve hidden from myself.
