The SIG Penrose/SLaM Integrated Community Rehabilitation Service (ICRS) officially launched on Friday, September 20th, at the Callander Road site, marking a significant achievement in community-based mental health care. This innovative service offers mixed-gender supported living and specialist rehabilitation for residents across Croydon, Lewisham, and Southwark as part of a partnership between SIG Penrose and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The service aims to provide intensive support for individuals transitioning from hospital care to more independent living, helping them step down to less supported accommodation.

Group CEO Gill Arukpe expressed the importance of the launch, describing it as a milestone for Penrose and the wider Social Interest Group. She celebrated the collaboration between staff and partners, acknowledging the efforts of the development, operational, and central service teams that helped bring ICRS to life. Gill also thanked those who attended and participated in the event, including the first residents, whose speeches, dancing, and singing brought a special energy to the day.

Residents Simone and Robin shared their personal experiences, praising the individualised care they receive. Simone mentioned how the service provides “one-on-one attention” from support workers, while Robin said he feels “privileged” to be part of the programme, noting how it has given him a sense of freedom and confidence.

The launch event was a vibrant celebration featuring speeches, music, a DJ, and a BBQ. Attendees enjoyed a variety of dishes, including curry goat, BBQ chicken, salads, and the ever-popular puff puffs. The sunny weather added to the joyful atmosphere, with attendees mingling, dancing, and reflecting on the progress of the service.

Stakeholders like service manager Biola Aleshe and Bronwyn also highlighted the hard work that has gone into building ICRS. They noted that this flagship service will serve as a model for future projects and expressed their excitement about its continued positive impact on the community.

With this launch, SIG Penrose/SLaM ICRS stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in mental health support. It offers a vital step towards recovery for those in need of specialised care.
