Over the past 12 months, SIG Penrose Roots Community-Based Recovery Service (Roots) has continued to grow as a valued community resource, providing opportunities for people to improve their wellbeing through meaningful engagement with nature, social connection, and community-based activities. The service supports a diverse range of individuals, including those experiencing social isolation, poor mental health, long-term health conditions, low confidence, and barriers to accessing wider community support.
Throughout the year, Roots delivered a range of nature-based activities designed to improve physical and emotional wellbeing. By creating welcoming and inclusive spaces, participants can build confidence, develop new skills, establish supportive relationships, and reconnect with the natural environment. Feedback from attendees consistently highlights improved wellbeing, increased social interaction, greater resilience, and enhanced feelings of belonging within their local community.
A major milestone was the introduction of the Community Connector (Green Social Prescriber) role, funded through the successful Nature Towns and Cities bid and delivered in partnership with LBC and a consortium of organisations. The initiative aims to explore how Luton’s diverse communities access nature and the barriers residents experience. The post strengthens links between health services, social prescribing teams, voluntary organisations and community-based nature programmes, helping more people find personalised support suited to their health and wellbeing needs.
The Green Social Prescriber has played an important role in raising awareness of the benefits of nature-based interventions among healthcare professionals and community partners. By developing relationships with GP practices, social prescribing teams, community groups, and local stakeholders, the role has helped establish clearer referral pathways into Roots. This has resulted in increased engagement from individuals who may not otherwise have accessed the service.
The role has also supported participants on a more individual basis, providing guidance, encouragement, and ongoing support to help them overcome barriers to engagement. This personalised approach has improved engagement rates and enabled participants to sustain involvement in activities that positively influence their mental, physical, and social wellbeing.
Looking ahead, the Green Social Prescriber role presents significant opportunities for further development and impact. The anticipated benefits include:
As the health and social care landscape continues to focus on prevention and community-based support, Roots is well placed to contribute to these priorities. The Green Social Prescriber role will be instrumental in ensuring that more residents can benefit from the proven health advantages of spending time outdoors, connecting with others, and participating in meaningful activities within their local community.
It has been a year of growth, connection and positive change for Roots. By helping people improve their wellbeing, reduce isolation, build confidence and form stronger community connections, the service is making a meaningful difference across Luton. With the Green Social Prescriber role now embedded, Roots is ready to reach more residents and create even greater impact in the years ahead.
