When Matthew first arrived at SIG Penrose Roots, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Like many people taking that first step into something new, uncertainty and nerves were part of the journey. But what began as a tentative visit has grown into something far more meaningful. In this interview, Matthew shares how Penrose Roots (Roots) has helped him rebuild his confidence, discover new interests, and find a strong sense of belonging. From learning practical skills to forming friendships and speaking at community events, his story is a powerful reminder of how the right support and environment can help people truly flourish.
Thinking back to before you joined Roots, what was life like for you?
Before Roots, I spent a lot of time at home with little to do. Paul, my Support Worker, used to visit regularly to help me develop life skills. I had worked at Arriva for years, but when it closed, I found it hard to cope on my own, especially with my mental health. I attended a day centre, which was helpful, but it was Paul who told me about the Roots to Recovery garden down the road in 2018, and I’m really glad he did.
What do you remember about first hearing about Roots and taking that first step?
I was uncertain at first. New places can be daunting. Paul came with me the first few times, introduced me to the staff, and gradually eased me in, one week staying with me, the next leaving me to it. I remember thinking, “I like this,” and now I’ve been coming ever since.
What has Roots meant for your confidence and personal development?
My confidence has grown a lot, and I’ve learned many new skills. Staff are friendly and helpful, and I really enjoy seeing my friends in the garden. I like making different things, and I find the skills course very interesting and enjoyable. Watching the flowers and vegetables we’ve planted grow makes me feel happy and proud to be part of the Roots group.
What stands out to you most about the people and atmosphere at Roots?
I’ve learnt new skills, made friends, and discovered things I truly enjoy. The staff always takes the time to explain things clearly, and I learn something new nearly every visit, from awareness topics to cultural subjects. When I see a new member arrive, I try to make them feel welcome. We all look out for one another here.
Can you tell us about some of the other activities you’ve got involved in?
Yes, I also started attending Roots Connects, the weekly social group held on Fridays. I was nervous at first, but Sally, one of the Roots staff, made me feel at ease and really helped open my eyes. Since then, I’ve met new people, tried new activities, and grown in confidence. I especially enjoy the bingo, quizzes, and art.
What is it about the trips and walks that you enjoy most?
I really enjoy the trips and walks, and try to go whenever I can. I like seeing my friends, visiting new places, discovering new things, and trying new activities. I love the fresh air, seeing wildlife, listening to nature sounds, and smelling the flowers. The trips make me feel very happy. Having a support group that helps me get out and about means a lot. The walks are relaxing, good for my health, and give me a shared group experience. We do really well when it comes to access to nature.
Can you share a moment where you felt yourself stepping outside your comfort zone?
Last year, I made a conscious choice to be more positive and push myself. The staff makes that feel possible; they really listen and help me prepare. I helped write the quiz at our Harvest Festival, handed it out, collected the money, and marked the answers. I even wore a Quiz Master badge! I was nervous, but I also spoke on camera at the Harvest Festival, and during Autism Awareness Week, I delivered a talk on autism to a group of 15 people. We spent three weeks preparing for it. I’m proud of that. Not long ago, I wouldn’t have done it.
How has the Skills Builder course supported your goals?
I’ve really enjoyed doing the Skills Builder course and attending it every week. It’s one-to-one, which I appreciate, and it’s been very helpful so far. There’s a clear goal to work towards, and I believe it will help me get a job in the future by showing how I’ve grown and learned new skills. I enjoy the hands-on topics, and each session is different. I’m learning how to explain myself better, and it’s already made a real difference. Sally has done a great job, taking her time to work through it with me.
How does coming to Roots help on difficult days?
Some mornings I don’t want to get out of bed because of my mental health, but it’s always worth making the effort to come to Roots. Every single time, I’m glad I came. The garden, the artwork, the friendships, and the activities all help my mental health, and that positively affects the rest of my life.
When you think about the future, what role do you see this service continuing to play in your life?
If Roots weren’t here, I would be sitting at home, bored and sad. It really is as simple as that. Here, we are all listened to and treated equally. Without these sessions, I think we’d all be lost. Roots is a great asset, and I hope it continues for a long time. As long as Roots is here, I’ll keep coming.
