Roots Celebration Day

On a cold damp September, the 29th Roots gathered its members together to celebrate the first year of being fully funded by the National Lottery. Staff did not want the moment to pass without showing members how grateful they are that they chose Roots to be part of their journey. After the cold dark start, the sun shone and there was a small buffet lunch, therapy ponies, a visit from Sue, the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and even a 71st birthday cake. The ponies went down a treat, receiving lots of cuddles helping themselves to the veggie donation box as well as members’ lunches. But it was a small price to pay for the ponies’ excellent lawn mowing skills.

John, one of the eldest members was a little emotional as he was presented with his birthday cake and card full of lovely well wishes from the group. The members were absolutely honoured to welcome the Lord Lieutenant who literally took on the role as Bedfordshire’s royal representative, a week before the Queen’s passing. The members listened to the story of Sue being at the Queen’s funeral and Sue spoke about the fact that Roots was not just a place it was a feeling. She asked if she could catch up soon as she wants to know how a project that that has “feeling”, was created. Sam, Roots’ service manager said: “In truth, I do not know how we do it, we just do, so I need to start thinking of a creative answer for her!”
