An exciting opportunity is now available for an ambitious, caring and highly motivated Engagement Worker to work in an one-of-a-kind service supporting people with personality disorders to resettle in the community and lead happy, healthy lives, free from crime.
The Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway programme is a jointly commissioned initiative (NHSE and HMPPS) that aims to provide a Pathway of Psychologically Informed Services for a challenging Offender Group who are likely to present with personality difficulties and have the potential of being a risk to themselves and others or reoffend in a harmful way.
The OPD Housing and Accommodation Support Services (HASS) have been designed to support the OPD Pathway providing high residential specialist housing and accommodation support. Our 24-hour service offers far more than a roof over people’s heads; it offers a base for a range of 1-1 and group interventions, delivered by our teams and external partners, that equips residents with the skills and confidence to move on safely into independent living.
OPD HASS is a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE), which means the day-to-day running has been designed to take the emotional needs of people with these experiences into account. The service is part of the Enabling Environments (EE) network and committed in creating an environment where everyone thrives, succeeds, and achieves more positive outcomes.
To be successful in this role, you will have great communication and engagement skills, with the maturity to work within a framework of recovery, building confidence, self-esteem, hope and positive coping skills. You will be someone who shares our values and be committed to achieving great outcomes for our service users.
You will required to work 37.5 hours per week, in a shift pattern including weekends, bank holidays, so you’ll need to be flexible with the hours you are able to work.
- To be creative in involving the service users in meetings which ensures they remain at the centre of the discussion
- To support service users to achieve their goals, in line with their support plan, including providing support to run house meetings, organise in-house activities with a view to create a positive sense of community. Activities include: gardening, cooking, mindfulness, knitting, housing workshops, movement & drama therapy.
- Provide / arrange for various advice, advocacy and or information to service users in relation to physical health matters, substance misuse welfare benefits, education, employment and training, life skills and any other identified support needs.
- Staff are encouraged to bring their skills and interests in the work and being creative in engaging our residents primarily by way of individual assessments, risk management and support plans inclusive of the agreed needs and goals of the service users
- A big part of what you will be doing is helping people to obtain employment, training and support to maximise levels of benefit entitlement. Simultaneously you will also provide support with respective Move-On plans on to longer term accommodation options.
- Support residents with rent/arrears payments, report maintenance requests and ensures a clean, welcoming environment for all.
- Working within a multi-disciplinary framework, liaise with external professionals, e.g. GP’s, probation officer, care coordinators etc.
- Assist the staff team in managing security and safety, health & safety, maintenance, rent/charges collection, arrears and void control.
What we are looking for:
- Knowledge/experience in mental health and working with vulnerable/challenging individuals or people with substance misuse issues
- Knowledge/experience of Personality Disorder, models of treatment & intervention
- Knowledge/experience in risk assessment and risk management
- Creativity and problem-solving skills
- The ability to work well in a team
- Being able to work with different agencies/organisations and understanding the multi-disciplinary approach
- Understanding and practical application of key legislation regarding social care, housing, criminal justice and mental health
